The Science Behind KTP Laser Treatment

KTP stands for potassium titanyl phosphate. The color of the laser is usually green. The way the process works is through stimulating a natural process of healing within the target cells. The process works on the principle of selective thermolysis. It involves introducing a beam of light that belongs to a particular wavelength and color to the targeted chromophores. The targeted chromophores absorb the light ray.

By using this method, it is possible to ensure that surrounding tissues are not affected; only the chromophores are targeted by the laser. Various skin problems can be rectified by using different wavelengths and by varying the intensity of the light beam and the duration of the pulse. For example, if you want to get rid of acne scars, then you’ll need a treatment that is able to reach the deep pores where the scarred cells are located.

The main skin cells that the KTP laser process can target include melanin, the red tattoo pigment, and oxyhemoglobin. The intensity of the pulse is usually around 532 nm. However, depending on the dermatological condition being treated, the intensity can vary. You are left with skin that looks clear, is free of scars, and is smooth to the touch.

The Process

Depending on the intensity of the dermatological condition being treated, the KTP laser treatment process can take anywhere between fifteen and forty minutes. During the procedure, a patch will be placed over your eyes as a protective measure. A cool clear gel will be applied on your skin in order to protect the superficial skin. A coupling agent may be used in this step as well.

Once the laser beam is in use, you will be able to feel a slight warm tinge as the KTP laser warms the blood vessels under the skin. You are left with beautiful and clear skin. You will notice results immediately, and they will only get better as the target cells heal over the next three to four weeks.
