Helping Patients in Scottsdale and Greater Phoenix, Arizona

You may be eating healthy and exercising regularly but still struggle to lose stubborn fat in certain areas. One such area could be below the chin where you have submental fat, producing what is popularly known as a double chin. If you’re having trouble getting rid of a double chin but don’t want to correct it with cosmetic surgery, you’ll be happy to know that there is a new minimally invasive solution: Kybella®.

What Is Kybella?

Kybella is an FDA-approved injectable drug intended to destroy moderate to severe submental fat (fat below the chin) in people above the age of 18. The FDA approval is only for treatment in the submental area, as it has not yet been tested for safe and effective use in other parts of the body.

The active ingredient in Kybella is a synthetic form of the naturally occurring deoxycholic acid that absorbs and destroys fat cells in our body.

Once Kybella is injected in the submental area, it destroys the treated fatty tissue. After the fat cells are destroyed, their remnants are naturally filtered out by the body over time. The Kybella treatment should be administered by highly trained professionals, since the acid could harm other cells if not administered properly.

Recovery and Results

It is recommended that you book a Kybella treatment session right before a weekend, so that you have two full days to recover. There will be some swelling and bruising in the region, which may last between two and fourteen days. Any redness, pain, numbness, or hardening should subside within two days. You can use cold compress or ice packs as directed to relieve pain and swelling.

Any prolonged side effects should be reported to the healthcare specialist for proper care and treatment. Results of Kybella are long-lasting, but patients should follow a healthy diet and regular exercise to maximize the benefits of the treatment.

Kybella Treatment Process

An inspection of the area below and around your chin is done by a trained medical professional to determine whether Kybella will work for you. A treatment is then designed for your specific needs and requirements.

Each treatment takes around 15 to 20 minutes and involves injecting multiple doses of Kybella in the submental area. The number of treatments needed varies depending on the patient’s chin profile. On average, around six treatments are done, with at least a month in between each treatment.

Each treatment begins with the specialist icing or numbing the area below your chin. A small dotted grid that comes with the Kybella pack is used to mark the spots where the injection will be administered. There may a slight burning sensation when Kybella is being injected, but that is only temporary. Depending on the amount of fat, you could receive up to 50 injections in a single treatment session, with a minimum of 20 to 30 injections per session.
