Breast Augmentation

With the development of age, many women can start to feel that they are losing their youthful contours. Life events such as childbirth and breastfeeding can massively alter the shape of the breasts, leaving them looking smaller than before. Many women are also naturally born with smaller breasts that leave them feeling insecure about their body.

Breast augmentation, or augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure that involves inserting implants into the tissues of the breasts in order to make them larger and fuller. Asymmetrical breasts can also be fixed with this procedure. To achieve well-rounded breasts that have adequate volume, a breast augmentation is the ideal choice.

It is important to remember that saggy breasts cannot be restored with breast augmentation. You would need to undergo a different procedure, a breast lift, to achieve that. You can discuss your options for a breast lift with your surgeon, and in many cases, it can performed at the same time as breast augmentation.

Ideal Candidates

The ideal candidate for breast augmentation is someone who, although healthy, suffers from a negative body image and reduced self-confidence because of their breasts.

Not everyone is suitable for breast augmentation surgery, and you must be a non-smoker or quit smoking prior to surgery. Similarly, alcohol use or drug use are prohibited, as these can cause surgical complications. Certain medication such as anti-histamines should also be avoided. Make sure to get a comprehensive list of what you can or cannot do prior to your surgery.

The Procedure

Following administration of anesthesia to help the patient feel comfortable, the surgeon will create incisions. These incisions can be made in areas like the breast fold (inframammary), around the areola (periareolar), and in the armpit (transaxillary). The choice of incision location will be up to you and your surgeon and will be discussed during a consultation.

Once the incisions have been created, a pocket will be made in the tissue. The implant will then be inserted. Breast implants can either be filled with silicone gel or a saline solution. They can be round or teardrop-shaped, and they can be textured or smooth. These details will also be worked out during the breast augmentation consultation.

After correct positioning of the implants, the incisions will be sealed with the help of surgical sutures.
